Using it

Which programs does it work with?

Any program that uses a microphone, such as Discord, in-game voice chat and streaming software. You pick the SoundRelay microphone in that program's settings.

Can several clips play at once?

No. One clip plays at a time. Starting a clip stops the one that was playing. A clip can be set to repeat.

Will a hotkey still reach my game?

A key you assign as a hotkey is used by SoundRelay while the app is running, so pick keys your games do not need.

Which file types can I add?

MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, M4A and WebM, by drag and drop or from a file dialog. You can export any clip back to a file.

Can I make my own tags?

No. Tags come from a built-in list of 27, and the same list filters the Workshop.

Windows, Linux and Steam Deck

Do my sound files work on both Windows and Linux?

Yes. A sound file is the same file on every system. A clip added on Windows plays on Linux and Steam Deck with nothing to convert, and the other way round. Steam Cloud carries your sound files between your computers.

Do Workshop clips work on every system?

Yes. A Workshop clip is one audio file with a picture and tags, and the same item can be subscribed to from Windows, Linux and Steam Deck.

Do I need to install a driver?

On Windows, yes: a virtual audio cable. SoundRelay includes VB-CABLE from VB-Audio and installs it from the setup guide, followed by a restart. On Linux and Steam Deck there is nothing to install.

Which microphone do I choose in Discord or my game?

On Windows, CABLE Output. On Linux and Steam Deck, SoundRelay_Microphone_Input.

Which Linux systems are supported?

It is tested on SteamOS, Bazzite and CachyOS. It is built on the standard Linux sound servers (PipeWire with pipewire-pulse, or PulseAudio), so most Fedora-based and Arch-based systems are expected to work, but they have not all been tested.

Do hotkeys work on Wayland?

They always work while a game running through Proton has focus. On KDE Plasma, combinations with Ctrl, Alt or Meta and the F keys also work in every other window. Plain letter and number keys work in every window only after you set “Legacy X11 App Support” to “Always” in KDE's System Settings. On X11, hotkeys work everywhere.
